Prozac Was the First SSRI Antidepressant

Prozac is the brand name for fluoxetine, an SSRI class depression pill. Prozac was first sold in 1988 after being approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of many different types of depression. Prozac has also been used to treat panic disorder, major depression, chronic depression, bulimia nervosa, premenstrual dysphoric disorder and anxiety. A generic version of Prozac is available which makes it more affordable than the new generation of antidepressants like Cymbalta and Pristiq. Prozac has some unfortunate and hard-to-deal-with side effects. About 8% of patients develop a serious skin rash while taking Prozac. In many of these cases, the skin rash became so severe that the patient was no longer able to take fluoxetine. Prozac can also cause some internal bleeding so patients should not take aspirin or ibuprofen while taking it. If you take aspirin or ibuprofen with Prozac, you could experience severe intestinal bleeding.
