Reading piano tabs can be very helpful, especially for beginners who are just starting out. Of course, I would advise everyone to eventually learn standard notation, because it can offer you much more, but tabs are quite okay to start with. They will enable you to learn, share, and expand your musical skills.
What are tabs exactly and how are they different from standard sheet music? Piano tabs are a simple way of writing down notes and chords. They are easier to learn and read than traditional sheet music, but not as detailed. Remember, tabs will only get you so far.
Okay, let’s learn how to read them. Piano tabs are written in the following format: 4|–c-d-e-f-|. They are read from left to right and usually consist of several lines like the one above. As you can see, each line starts with a number and a bar. The number indicates an octave in which the notes lie. In our example, we play in octave 4. Octaves start on the “c” key, remember. To determine an octave start counting from the first c. The fourth c begins the fourth octave.
Next, you can see there are some dashes and letters. They represent notes and timing. Notes are written in lowercase and uppercase letters. Lowercase (a,b,c,d,e,f,g) indicate the natural notes which are the white keys on the piano, and uppercase (A,C,D,F,G) indicate sharps. Important note: There are no flats in piano tabs, they’re all written as sharps. D-flat, for example, is written as C (meaning C-sharp). Dashes are used to indicate timing. They represent half steps. The “|” symbols is used to separate measures.
That pretty much covers the basics. There are some more advanced symbols, but for starters, this will do just fine. Just take it easy and go slowly at first. Always remember though that when it comes to quality and details, tabs can never replace traditional sheet music.
